Flags

Canvas is central to each piece in the "Flag" series. Addition fabrics include: table clothes, curtains, bed sheets, items of clothing, nylon parachute material, and vinyl designed for the manufacturing of car seats. The top part of each work, the canvas section, takes the format of an upside down L-shape. This is deliberately left blank and the edges are cut jagged. All pattern and color occurs towards the bottom portion.

I think of these objects as inverted flags or banners. The decorative aspects bleed downward to the section of the format that would represent the flagpole or handle. Each piece takes its title from a popular holiday or day of distinction. The works included here are: Day of the Dance, Summer Solstice, Veteran's Day, First Day of Autumn, Election Day, December 23rd, Mother's Day, Remembrance Day, Daylight Savings Time, and Black Friday. Works from this series that are not depicted here include: Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Valentine's Day, Saint Patrick's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Easter.
